Karamitsos Offers Coin from Crete Among Rarities Graded by NGC and PMG

The June 2024 auction features hundreds of coins certified by NGC and notes certified by PMG, many of them from southern Europe.

A rare coin from Crete and a World War II Treasury Note are among hundreds of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) and hundreds of banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) available in an upcoming A. Karamitsos auction. Bidding is already underway for the Postal & Live Internet Auction 732 (Part A) and (Part B), which are scheduled for June 8-9, 2024.

The top lot in the auction is a Crete 1901 2 Drachmas graded NGC MS 62+ (lot 6373), which has a starting price of €15,000 (about $16,000). The obverse features a bust of Prince George, who was the son of King George I and served as High Commissioner of the Cretan State from 1898 to 1906. There are more than 100 examples of this coin in the NGC Census, but only one is graded higher than this one.

  • a Greece 1879A 10 Lepta graded NGC MS 65 BN (lot 6107), with a starting price of €10,000 (about $11,000)
  • a Greece 1879A 5 Lepta graded NGC MS 64 RB (lot 6106), with a starting price of €7,000 (about $7,500)
  • a Bulgaria 1912 100 Leva graded NGC MS 61 DPL (lot 6899), with a starting price of €7,000 (about $7,500)
  • a Greece 1963 30 Drachmas - Dynasty Centennial graded NGC SP 67 (lot 6168), with a starting price of €6,800 (about $7,300)
  • a Germany 1898-dated Hannover Gold Marie of Saxe-Altenburg Medal graded NGC UNC Details (lot 7484), with a starting price of €6,200 (about $6,700)
  • an Italy 1815 Parma 5 Lire graded NGC MS 63 (lot 7032), with a starting price of €5,300 (about $5,700)

The top paper money collectible in the auction is a Greece 1944 Treasury Note graded PMG 50 About Uncirculated (lot 6678). Issued during the hyper-inflation that gripped Greece during World War II, the note was filled in with an amount of 1 billion drachmai. It has a starting price of €7,500 (about $8,100)

  • a Greece, National Bank 1926 1,000 Drachmai graded PMG 53 About Uncirculated EPQ (lot 6489), with a starting price of €3,000 (about $3,200)
  • a Greece, Bank of Greece 1944 500 Drachmai on 1,000 Drachmai - Corfu graded PMG 35 Choice Very Fine (lot 6677), with a starting price of €3,000 (about $3,200)
