Rare Taler Among NGC-graded Highlights in Polish Auction

Posted on 3/12/2024

The 17th century coin is offered in a March sale presented by Antykwariat Numizmatyczny Michał Niemczyk.

A seldom-seen taler is among dozens of vintage European coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are available in an Antykwariat Numizmatyczny Michał Niemczyk sale. Online bidding is already underway for Auction 43, which is divided into Sessions I through V and will be held March 16-20, 2024.

The top NGC-certified highlight is a Poland 1685 DL Danzig Taler graded NGC AU 55 (Session I, lot 550), with a starting price of PLN 80,000 (about $20,400). Minted in small quantities during King John III Sobieski's reign from 1674 until his death in 1696, this coin is an example of the last taler to be struck at the Gdańsk mint. The obverse depicts the king, while the reverse features two lions flanking the city coat of arms. Fewer than a dozen of these coins are known to exist today, according to the auction house. Only three examples are listed in the NGC Census, with just one in finer condition than this example.
