CGC-certified Batman #181 Realizes More than $16,000 in Hake’s Auction

Posted on 3/27/2024

The first appearance of Poison Ivy scratched an itch for collectors and led comic sales in the March auction.

Several exciting Silver Age classics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) were sold for five figures in Hake’s Auction 240 on March 20, 2024.

The top CGC-certified comic sold in this auction was a Batman #181 graded CGC 9.4 (lot 663), which realized $16,979. CGC has certified more than 3,700 examples of Batman #181, but only 13 in grades higher than this one. It features the first appearance of Dr. Pamela Isley, who — as Poison Ivy — possesses a unique blend of beauty and lethal botanical prowess.

With a deep-seated connection to nature, she views plants as her allies and seeks to protect them at any cost, often resorting to criminal activities to achieve her environmentalist goals. Poison Ivy's ability to control plant life grants her formidable abilities in combat and manipulation, making her a recurring adversary for Batman and a complex character whose motivations blur the lines between villainy and environmental activism.

Other CGC-certified comics in this auction include:
