Three Exceptionally Rare PMG-certified Curacao Banknotes Lead April Sale

A trio of exceptionally rare Curacao banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) leads the Netherlands World Banknote Signature sale presented by Heritage Auctions. Each note possesses Serial Number 1 and is pedigreed to the Mathis Verkooijen Collection. Pre-bidding for the Curacao notes and other PMG-certified world rarities is available until April 22, 2022, when the sale ends.

One of the top lots is a Curacao / Dutch Administration 1918 250 Gulden with Serial Number 1 graded PMG 62 Uncirculated (lot 25432). This note represents the currency that was used by the Dutch-governed region in the Caribbean north of Venezuela. This note has an estimate of at least $40,000.

Sharing the top spot with an estimate of at least $40,000 apiece are two Curacao / Dutch Administration 1925 banknotes, both with Serial Number 1. Lot 25446 is a 250 Gulden graded PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated, while lot 25447 is a 500 Gulden graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated.

Mathis Verkooijen Collection

The Mathis Verkooijen Collection is arguably one of the most important and exceedingly rare collections of Dutch Caribbean currency. It includes of a complete denominational set of Curacao Serial Number 1 banknotes issued 1918 and 1925.
