Rare PMG-certified US Note Realizes $93,000 in Stack's Bowers Sale

Several other high-value PMG-graded banknotes from the 19th and 20th centuries realized prices that exceeded their estimates.

A rare US banknote certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) sold for just shy of $100,000 at a Stack’s Bowers auction. The banknote was among several PMG-graded notes that exceeded their minimum estimates the during Stack’s Bowers Spring 2022 Auction – Session 7, which concluded April 7.

The top result was an 1890 $2 Treasury Note graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20148) that went for $93,000, exceeding its estimate. The note shows James McPherson, a highly regarded Union general who died in the Civil War. It is one of three examples of this catalog number to share the highest grade in the PMG Population Report.

Other PMG-certified highlights in the sale include:

  • an 1886 $5 Silver Certificate graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20123) that realized $50,400
  • a 1934 $1,000 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20276) that realized $36,000
  • a Confederate States of America 1861 $100 graded PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (lot 20037) that realized $36,000
  • a 1934A $1,000 Federal Reserve Note (Atlanta) graded PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20286) that realized $34,800
  • a Confederate States of America 1861 $500 graded PMG 25 Very Fine (lot 20036) that realized $31,200
  • a 1928 $500 Federal Reserve Note (Minneapolis) graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20250) that realized $31,200
  • a group of seven 1934A $500 Federal Reserve Notes (New York) with consecutive serial numbers graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated EPQ to PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated EPQ (lot 20263) that realized $31,200
