Greek Auction Features Almost 400 PMG-certified World Banknotes

Posted on 5/3/2022

The Karamitsos sale in June features PMG-certified notes from Greece and other countries, including a great rarity from the Ionian Bank.

Almost 400 banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are being offered in an upcoming Greek auction. More than half of the PMG-certified notes in the sale are from Greece. Online bidding is currently underway for A. Karamitsos’ Auction 694 Part A and Part B, which concludes June 11-12, 2022.

The top lot is a Greece, Ionian Bank Ltd. 1888-89 100 Drachmai graded PMG 12 Fine (Part A, lot 6472), with a starting price of €40,000 (about $42,000). The United Kingdom flag on the front of the note is a reminder of the bank’s origin in the Ionian Isles, which was a British protectorate before being transferred to Greek control in 1864.
