This copy (lot 2) has the potential to set a new record as the most expensive copy of Detective Comics #27 ever sold, a record previously held by one graded CGC 7.0 that sold for $1.5 million through Heritage Auctions in November 2020. Other seven-figure sales for Detective Comics #27 include a CGC 5.0 that realized $1.12 million at a Heritage sale in June 2021 and a CGC 8.0 that realized $1.07 million at a Heritage sale in February 2010.

Detective Comics premiered in 1937 from National Press (the precursor to DC Comics) with stories by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. The following year, Siegel and Shuster left Detective Comics to debut Superman in Action Comics #1. Hoping to capitalize on the massive success of superheroes thanks to Superman, Detective Comics #27 introduced Batman in 1939, with a six-page story by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. The publisher realized it had a hit on its hands, and Batman was given his own series in 1940.

There are only 36 copies of Detective Comics #27 with the coveted Universal grade in the CGC Census; in addition to the copy being offered by Goldin, there are five others graded CGC 6.5 and only eight with higher grades.

Other notable CGC-certified items in this auction include:

  • An Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 8.0 (lot 3)
