Walt Disney comics also make a strong showing in a Heritage sale of Dell and Gold Key comics in November 2022.

The first Star Trek comic book went where it has never gone before, as a copy graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) went for a record amount at a Heritage Auctions sale. Other CGC-certified books also impressed in Doug’s Dell and Gold Key Comics Auction on November 3, 2022, including ones featuring popular characters from Looney Tunes, Disney and Scooby-Doo.

The auction’s top-seller was a Star Trek #1 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 81416) that realized a new record for the issue, a commanding $46,500. This is the first comic book appearance of the Star Trek franchise, published by Gold Key Comics in 1967. It is one of only five copies in the CGC Census graded CGC 9.6, with only one graded higher. This sale more than doubled its previous record of $20,400 for a CGC 9.6 sold in 2019.

The Disney character Donald Duck also had a little to squawk about, taking the second- and third-highest sales position in the sale, beginning with a Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #2 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 81461) that sold for $38,400. This comic was released by Dell Publishing in 1940, and this copy is the single highest-graded of this book. Donald Duck was also featured in Four Color #9 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 81089), which realized $31,200. Released by Dell Publishing in 1942, this is one of only three copies in the CGC Census graded CGC 9.6, with none higher.
