Early Spider-Man Comics Certified by CGC in Heritage Sale

Many Golden and Silver Age comics that are graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) are available in the Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction, which is being presented by Heritage Auctions on November 17-20, 2022. Among them are the first appearances of some of comics’ most popular heroes, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and many more.
Swinging ahead of the rest is an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 8.5 (lot 92002), for which bidding had already reached $200,000 a week before the auction. Also available is an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 92003) which had already climbed to $140,000.

Spider-Man first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, published by Marvel Comics in 1962. In the years before his death, Lee enjoyed telling the story to fans about his editor at the time who didn’t like the idea of Spider-Man and only allowed Lee to publish the story because it was the last issue of the struggling Amazing Fantasy series. But, as Lee told it, the character was an immediate hit with fans, and his editor suddenly loved Spider-Man and rushed him into his own monthly series, beginning with The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963.
Spider-Man’s popularity has only increased over the years, spinning out into multiple films, television series, cartoons and more. In 2021, a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 9.6 briefly held the record as the most expensive comic when it was sold for $3.6 million. In 2022, a study found that Spider-Man is the most popular superhero in more than half the United States.
