The X-Men debuted in the pages of X-Men #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in July 1963. The team of mutants included Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel and Iceman, led by Professor Charles Xavier against the villain Magneto. The team’s lineup was changed to Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Thunderbird with the release of Giant-Size X-Men, by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, in 1975.

There are more than 12,000 copies of Giant Size X-Men #1 graded by CGC, but none higher than CGC 9.8. This copy is one of only 10 Signature Series graded CGC 9.8.

The sale for $47,500 is the second-highest for a Signature Series copy of this book; a Stan Lee-signed CGC 9.8 sold for $66,000 through Heritage Auctions in June 2021. The most valuable across all labels, however, is a Universal CGC 9.8 that was sold for $72,000 by Heritage Auctions, also in June 2021.
