CGC-certified Journey into Mystery #83 Sells for Over $20,000 in Hake's Auction

A copy of the comic book with the first appearance of Marvel Comics’ Thor, which was graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), had a thunderous performance in Hake’s Auction #236 on November 16, 2022. The auction included more than 250 CGC-certified comic books, along with many other collectible video games, sports cards and comic book art selections.

The highest performing CGC-certified comic book in the auction was a Journey Into Mystery #83 graded CGC 5.5 (Item #1283) which realized $20,766.

Published in 1962 by Marvel Comics, the book features the debut of Marvel’s Thor by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and Larry Lieber. Originally, Thor was the Norse god of thunder who was sent to Earth by his father, Odin, to learn humility under the guise of Dr. Donald Blake. The following year, Thor became a founding member of The Avengers, and his character has been adapted to many different film and television projects throughout the decades.
