More than 400 vintage coins from Latin America and the Philippines, which hail from the incredible collection of numismatic author Emilio Ortiz, are available in the auction on January 12.

More than 400 vintage coins from Latin America and the Philippines, almost all of which are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), are being offered in an upcoming Stack’s Bowers auction. Online bidding is already underway for the Emilio M. Ortiz Collection auction, which will be held on January 12, 2024.

Ortiz, a well-known numismatic author, spent a lifetime assembling a cabinet of museum-quality Spanish, Spanish Colonial and Cuban coinage. This extensive assortment, gathered over several decades, encompasses nearly every edition of the 1/4 Real denomination minted during the colonial era in Latin America. According to the auction house, some of these coins have been unavailable in the market for an extended period, and in certain instances they have never been presented in the remarkable state of preservation showcased in this sale.

One highlight of the auction is a Peru (1568-70)R Rincon 1/4 Real - Philip II graded NGC VF 30 (lot 51124), which has an estimate of $5,000 to $7,500. Distinguished by its fine pedigree and exceptional quality, this stunning coin is in remarkable condition for one that is over 450 years old. With its rare attributes and outstanding state of preservation, this coin not only represents a unique and sought-after variant but also contributes to the continued appreciation and understanding of the rich numismatic history associated with Spanish colonial coinage.

Also offered is a Dominican Republic (1810-20) Santo Domingo 1/4 Real graded NGC AU 55 BN (lot 51401) with an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000. It is struck over a rarely encountered copper coin from Maracaibo, Venezuela, that was minted during the War for Independence there and authorized by Captain General Fernando Mijares in March 1813, according to the auction house. These coins were in circulation for approximately six months but were shunned by the public and beset by counterfeiting issues.
