What makes it special? The front of the banknote shows the HMS Supply in Sydney Cove, along with the date of January 26, 1988. This is 200 years after the first British landed there to establish a settlement. The anniversary of this date is celebrated as Australia Day, the national day of the country of 26 million people. The back of the note shows an Aboriginal youth and ancient rock paintings.

Did you know? Polymer banknotes were developed in the 1980s, with Haiti, Costa Rica and the Isle of Man experimenting with their use as currency. However, the Australian 1988 10 Dollars is generally regarded as the world's first true polymer note. Within a decade, Australia had switched all its currency to polymer, which is also used today by dozens of other countries.
