NGC Registry Featured Set: US Modern Commemoratives

Posted on 1/16/2024

This set by Bill Dobbs has every commemorative silver dollar from 1983 to 2023.

The much anticipated Harriet Tubman commemorative coin series from the US Mint was released on January 4, 2024. The new Harriet Tubman coins will be a fine series to complete many modern NGC Registry commemorative sets!

The NGC Registry “Commemoratives” category is the second most popular category overall and currently hosts more than 11,300 sets! And the Modern Commemorative Silver Dollars, 1983-Date, Mint State and Proof set type that we are spotlighting is the favorite modern commemorative set type, with 1,330 total participating sets to date. This month, we feature a comprehensive Silver Dollar Commemorative set by Bill Dobbs, found here.

Spanning a 40-year time span and still growing, this set type is a challenge for even the most dedicated of collectors to complete. Assembling a total collection in top grades is no small endeavor, to be sure. It is quite an accomplishment to be diligent enough and patient enough to get anywhere in the top 10 with this set. Bill stands proudly in second place, hovering below first place by just a few hundred points. All 178 coins are graded NGC Top Pop 70s, like this rare Olympic High Jump coin (of which NGC has only certified 10 at the highest grade), above. Amazingly enough, Bill began this set less than a year ago, in early 2023, and he boasts images and comments for all coins. The gallery here should not be missed. It is a pictorial numismatic reference of the evolution of the modern commemorative Silver Proof Dollar.

We also have to tip our hats to the #1 set by Bruce Laquster, a Best In Category winner for 29 years. Bruce sets a very high standard, indeed with his remarkable set here. Interestingly, the difference between first and second place in this set is just one coin, one grade difference! Bill has the 1994-D World Cup in an NGC MS 70. Bruce Laquster has the same coin in an NGC MS 70 PL! Well done, gentleman!

Thank you, Bill Dobbs and Bruce Laquster, for making this a very exciting set to follow! We appreciate your contributions to the NGC Registry collecting community, and we are looking forward to seeing what updates you have for this set and others for 2024. The NGC Registry 2024 awards period has begun!

Would you like your set to be featured in a future article? 100% completion in a set is not always feasible. Perhaps we will choose someone whose set has a personal story behind it or some interesting historical facts. We are looking for those sets where someone has taken the time to make the set unique and a reflection of his or her personal collecting style. It may be your set! Stay tuned.
