NGC Special Designations and Labels for the US and Royal Mint's 2024 Liberty & Britannia Collaboration

Posted on 2/2/2024

The coins and medal are part of the second collaboration between the US and Royal Mints. Label options may have changed. Please refer to the Special Labels page for current availability.

On February 8, the US Mint and The Royal Mint are releasing their newest collaboration: the Liberty & Britannia program. The program includes the 2024 Liberty & Britannia Gold Coin and Silver Medal, which were struck at the West Point and Philadelphia Mints. Great Britain will issue gold and silver coins, as well. This special series is the second collaboration between two of the world's largest and oldest mints, following their successful Mayflower 400th Anniversary joint project in 2021.

To celebrate the US Mint's Liberty & Britannia Gold Coin and Silver Medal, Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is offering its attractive Liberty & Britannia Special Label by default for an additional fee. Featuring a full-color rendering of the American and British flags, the label enhances the thoughtful narrative told by the coin and medal. The popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases designations and labels are also available for coins and medals received within the first 30 days of release.

The obverse of the Liberty & Britannia Gold Coin and Silver Medal (and their British counterparts) feature a first-of-its-kind design in a collaboration by the Chief Engravers of the US Mint (Joseph Menna) and The Royal Mint (Gordon Summers). It portrays Lady Liberty and Britannia, appearing alongside one another. Lady Liberty represents freedom and is a frequent theme on US coinage, while Britannia is the personification of Britain and a symbol of national pride. The two allegorical female figures come together for the first time ever on coinage.

The reverse of the Liberty & Britannia Gold Coin and Silver Medal shows the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean, framed by two shores with a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine tree in the west and an English Yew tree in the east. The depiction represents both America and Great Britain and their mutual friendship from afar.

The reverse of The Royal Mint's gold and silver coins (referred to as Britannia & Liberty) will feature the same collaborative design from each mint's Chief Engraver as their US counterparts. The obverse shows a different design: the bust of King Charles III.

The coins and medal will only be available in limited quantities: the mintage limit is just 10,000 for the US gold coin, and 75,000 for the US silver medal.
