NGC-certified Coins and PMG-certified Notes Offered in Marudhar Arts Auction

Posted on 2/20/2024

Nearly 200 NGC-certified coins and dozens of PMG-certified notes from India and elsewhere are part of the February sale.

A superb selection of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) and notes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) is being offered in a Marudhar Arts sale. Online bidding for the auction, which is focused on rarities from India, is already underway for Marudhar's Floor & Real-Time Live Auction #43, which will be held February 24, 2024.

The top NGC-certified lot in the sale is an India 1878(C) Half Rupee graded NGC MS 63 (lot 476), which has an estimate of INR 500,000 to INR 700,000 (about $6,000 to $8,400). This Indian rarity dates to the late 1800s, when the country was still colonized by Great Britain. The obverse features a bust of Queen Victoria, with the words "Victoria Empress" alongside her depiction. The reverse shows an intricate filigreed design around simple, bold lettering that reads, "Half Rupee, India, 1878." There are only 33 examples of this coin in the NGC Census, with a mere three graded higher.

The front of this note shows a portrait of Afonso de Albuquerque, who served as the second viceroy of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515. The reverse shows another image of Albuquerque in the foreground looking at a fleet of his ships at sea in the background. There are only six examples of this particular note listed in this grade in the PMG Population Report, with only one graded higher.
