ComicConnect Offers Record-setting Batman Grail Certified by CGC

Posted on 2/22/2024

A copy of Detective Comics #27 that holds the sales record for the issue is available in ComicConnect's March sale.

A highly sought-after first appearance of Batman is among hundreds of iconic comic books certified by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) available in an upcoming auction. Bidding begins in late February for ComicConnect Event Auction 57, scheduled for March 17-22, 2024.

The top highlight is a Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 6.5. First published by National Press in 1939, Batman in Detective Comics (by creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger) was an attempt to mimic the success of Action Comics' Superman. The new superhero was indeed a success, which led to the Caped Crusader's own solo series in 1940. National Press later renamed itself DC Comics after their debut title, Detective Comics. There are only 77 examples of this comic in the CGC Census, and only eight are listed in a higher Universal grade.

This same example set the current sales record for this book when it was previously sold for $1.74 million by Goldin Auctions in 2022.
