NGC-certified Latin American Rarities Showcased in Upcoming Sedwick Auction

The May sale includes hundreds of NGC-certified coins and medals, including several expected to realize five figures.

More than 500 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in a Daniel Frank Sedwick Auctioneers sale, which is focused on vintage Latin American rarities. Bidding is already underway for Sedwick's Treasure, World, U.S. Coin & Paper Money Auction 35, which is being held May 7-9, 2024.

The top coin in the sale is a Peru (1568-70)P R 8 Reales – Rincon graded NGC AU Details and pedigreed to the L.R. Ponte Collection (lot 768), with an estimate of $50,000 to $100,000. Known as the first "dollar" ever created in South America, these Peruvian coins were struck without official authorization and quickly discontinued. Only 16 examples of this highly coveted coin are known today, according to the auction house.

Other NGC-certified coins in this auction include:

  • a Mexico (1714)MO J 8 Escudos - Struck from Royal Dies graded NGC MS 64 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 40), with an estimate of $35,000 to $70,000
  • a Peru 1686L R 8 Reales - Royal Coinage graded NGC XF 40 and pedigreed to the Millennium Collection (lot 817), with an estimate of $25,000 to $50,000
  • a Peru 1705L H 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 64 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 57), with an estimate of $25,000 to $50,000
  • a Peru 1709L M 2 Escudos – 2 Reales Royal Obverse Die graded NGC MS 65 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 72), with an estimate of $25,000 to $50,000
  • a Peru 1711L M 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 64 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 60), with an estimate of $25,000 to $37,500
  • a Mexico 1715MO J 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 62 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 44), with an estimate of $20,000 to $40,000
  • a Peru 1707L H 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 63 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 58), with an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000
  • a Mexico (1712)J 8 Escudos - Bar End Cross graded NGC MS 64 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 38), with an estimate of $15,000 to $30,000
  • a Peru 1711L M 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 62 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet (lot 61), with an estimate of $17,500 to $25,000
