Even mint state and circulation strike modern coins are susceptible to the horrors of improper storage just as much as their flashy proof strike cousins. Residues can develop and cause unattractive toning on a mint state strike coin as well.

This 1978 100 Pataca from Macau, China commemorating the Grand Prix was recently submitted to NCS to have the residues and undesirable toning removed from the surface prior to certification with NGC. This piece is popular among modern coin collectors for both its subject matter and comes in two versions; one with corporate sponsorship logos on the race car and one without. NCS conservators were able to safely remove the residues and lighten the dark toning to leave the coin stable and pleasing in appearance for long-term storage. This coin was able to grade well with NGC following conservation work.
