Modern coins with mint state strikes, as opposed to the flashy mirrored and cameo proof strikes, can develop residues and undesirable toning. These residues often mask the surface of a coin and are not only unattractive but can prevent a coin from grading at an optimum level.

This German 1972 10 Mark coin with the J mintmark for the Hamburg mint was issued in commemoration of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The reverse design is a stylized overhead view of the Olympic Stadium. Residues had developed over the surface leading to an odd mottled brown color. Removal of the residues as well as this unattractive color led to the coin grading very well at NGC. Being a modern coin dated 1970-present, submission of this coin did qualify for the special modern rate of $22.50 per coin which includes both the conservation and the grading with NGC.
