Conservation Showcase: 1917 S USA-Philippines 10 Centavo

Issued during the time that the Philippines were under U.S. control, this coin is part of a series popular with collectors both of U.S. coin issues as well as those of the Philippines. The S mintmark on this coin indicates the San Francisco mint and in fact all U.S.-Philippine coins were made in U.S. mints plus a branch mint for a time in the Philippine capital city of Manila.
This 1917 S 10 Centavo coin was stored for a long period in a PVC laden coin holder. The PVC in certain coin holders such as soft flips can combine with humidity in the air and leach out depositing a green residue on the surface of the coin within. This PVC haze can damage the surface of a coin. Luckily for this coin, the conservators at NCS were able to remove the green residue and the coin was able to grade with numeric grading at NGC.
