Improper storage can lead to the development of many kinds of residue that, besides being unattractive, could lead to corrosion. Corrosion of the surface of a coin can lead to what is commonly known as environmental damage.

This proof 1940 Walking Liberty Half Dollar was recently submitted to NCS for removal of the thick yellowish residues that were obscuring the mirrored surfaces of the original coin and creating the potential for permanent damage. Original surfaces were peaking through the residue on this coin in several small tantalizing spots. Conservation work was able to remove the yellow residue from the surface of this coin revealing surfaces that have been affected very little by the damaging aspects of such residue.
