First edition of first ever X-Men Comic up for sale as part of a unique auction of collectible comic books

Posted on 5/16/2014

In conjunction with the release of the highly anticipated new X-Men movie, Days of Future Past, a first edition of this popular comic book series is set to become available for public sale via online auction service, Auction My Stuff.

Launching on the 9th May 2014, X-Men #1 will form part of ‘The Comics Sale’, which will see a selection of 39 collectable comic book issues available to bid for over a 19 day period. Valued between £2,250- £3,000, this rare edition will give comic fans and collectors the opportunity to enjoy their own part of The X-Men legacy.

The X-Men franchise has fast become the most popular of the Marvel series with its 5th film set to overtake both Captain America and The Amazing Spiderman in its opening weekend. X-Men began in the early 1960s when Marvel Comics editor/writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby produced a number of superhero titles which stressed character personalities and personal conflict as much as action and adventure, including The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man comics. This new type of superhero was very different from the certain and all-powerful superheroes before them, helping change the public’s perception of what a superhero should be.

Other exciting lots include an Amazing Spider Man comic from 1942 featuring the first appearance of Princess Python; a Dare Devil comic from 1965 which was the last time the protagonist was seen in his pre red costume; and a Sub Marnier comic dating back to 1941 which has been valued at £7,000 (please see full catalogue attached).

Originally seen as merely children’s reading, today comic books are viewed as stand-alone art forms. The increase in the market value has occurred for varying reasons, namely growth in "fandom" communities, increase in artistic skill of the illustrators and buyers’ desire to own items of nostalgia.

Auction My Stuff founder Patrick Van der Vorst said of the sale; “Over the past decade there has been a noticeable upswing in the popularity of comic books. Schools are now including comics within the English syllabus and the numerous film adaptations over the years have brought comics to the foreground in many people’s minds”.

He added “We are extremely excited to be able to present this rare collection of comic books for public sale, all of which I’m sure will make a wonderful addition to any collection”.

Auction My Stuff is a new online service provided by online valuation service Value My Stuff which allows customers to put their items up for auction, once valued, in an EBay style marketplace where all items are vetted by experts and where market value is dictated not only by demand, but actual worth.

Online bidding will be available from Friday May 9th 2014 to Monday, May 28th 2014 at www.auctionmystuff.com
