Modern Chinese Varieties: 1994 Silver 50Y Proof

Posted on 5/8/2018

This is the 40th installment of our monthly column devoted to modern Chinese varieties.

This month we will feature a Silver 5oz variety that China issued in 1994 commemorating Sino-Singapore Friendship and denominated 50Y. This coin can be found with the Yuan symbol near and far from “50”.

The first variety (pictured below) is an example featuring a “near character” (Yuan) (Photo 1). The red arrow points to the close spacing.

Both of these varieties share the same common obverse featuring the date 1994 and the Mutianyu Great Wall (Photo 3).
