The 1792 Gold Washington President $10 Pattern, graded NGC XF 45★, was the coin most cherished by renowned numismatist Eric P. Newman, who passed away last year at age 106.

Newman, one of the greatest numismatic researchers and writers of all time, believed that this coin was struck as a pattern (a proposed coin) for a gold eagle, or $10 piece, and was expressly struck for, presented to and carried by George Washington. Meanwhile, an 1854-S $5, graded NGC XF 45, is only the fourth-known specimen. After being told by others that it was a counterfeit, a lifelong New England resident submitted it to NGC, which authenticated it.

The phrase "Discovery of a Lifetime" is printed on the NGC label, reflecting the coin's amazing background. Several days before the auction, bidding was already over $1.5 million on the Heritage Auction site. To read more about this coin and see a video, click here.
