NGC-graded Coins Top Sovereign Rarities Auction

Posted on 9/28/2018

Two NGC-certified English coins from the 17th century dramatically exceeded estimates in the British firm’s sale.

Two gold rarities from 17th century England, both certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), had the top prices realized in Sovereign Rarities Auction 1, held on September 25, 2018, in London.

A 1699 England Elephant & Castle Five Guinea, graded NGC MS 62, realized £186,000 (about $245,000 USD), far above its pre-auction estimate of £35,000 to £45,000. The coin’s Elephant and Castle name derives from the small design element below the bust of William III on the obverse that represents the African company that supplied the gold. The coin is the finest example certified by NGC.

Meanwhile, a 1675 Elephant Five Guinea, graded NGC MS 62+, realized £156,000 (about $205,000 USD), far above its pre-auction estimate of £35,000 to £45,000. The coin’s name also derives from the emblem of the African company that supplied the gold; in this case, the emblem is below the bust of Charles II on the obverse. Examples of this coin are rarely offered for sale.
