High-denomination Notes Certified by PMG Soar in Chicago

Two PMG-graded $5,000 Federal Reserve Notes realized $156,000 and $144,000 at an April Heritage Auctions sale.

Notes certified by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) led the way at a Heritage Auctions sale of US currency in late April 2019, with a PMG-certified 1928 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note - Atlanta as the top lot, realizing $156,000. With a grade of PMG 35 Choice Very Fine, the note is the finest of the four examples of that date, denomination and branch in the PMG Population Report.

Eight of the top 10 lots in the sale were certified by PMG, including the second- and third-highest lots, both graded PMG 55 About Uncirculated: a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note - Richmond that realized $144,000 and a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note - Chicago that realized $114,000.

Meanwhile, in a separate Heritage Auctions sale of world currency (also held during the Central States Numismatic Society convention in the Chicago area), 17 of the top 20 prices realized were for PMG-certified lots. These included six Canadian notes that each realized more than $20,000 (USD).
