David Camire, also an NGC Grading Finalizer and an internationally known expert in mint technology, addresses the importance of coin conservation and the future of the hobby.

David J. Camire, NCS President and an NGC Grading Finalizer, attended the “First Strike” ceremony for the 2019 Apollo 11 commemorative coins at the US Mint in Philadelphia on Dec. 13, 2018.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) Finalizer David J. Camire is featured in a May 10 article in COINage magazine.

The 1,600-word “COINage Confidential” Q&A discusses Camire’s roles as a collector, grader and conservator with a particularly deep expertise in mint errors and modern minting technology and production.

In addition to being an NGC Grading Finalizer since 1999, Camire has been president of the NGC affiliate Numismatic Conservation Services™ (NCS®) since it was founded in 2001.

By way of introduction, COINage says of Camire, “David, in his role as conservator, has handled many numismatic rarities and has been involved with the conservation of coins recovered from several shipwrecks including the S.S. Republic, S.S. New York, and S.S. Pulaski. An added benefit to working at NCS is his ability to consult and work with museums worldwide. David is an active volunteer at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History in helping to preserve the National Numismatic Collection. He has also consulted and worked with the Shanghai and Shenyang museums in China.”

He is co-author of the book, “100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins” (part of the Whitman “100” series).

In the Q&A, Camire addresses the need for coin conservation — removing surface contaminants from their surface while preserving the unique quality of their appearance; how coins damaged in natural disasters such as wildfires and floods can be restored; ways that mints, in particular, can help create new numismatics fans among the younger generation; and the “bleak” future of coin shows and conventions.

COINage is a 50-year-old, monthly publication in print and online produced by Dallas, Texas-based Beckett Media.
