New information Regarding the Bulgarian 20 and 100 Levas

At NGC, we pride ourselves on maintaining the highest standards of integrity in the grading industry, and seek to ensure that our customers and subsequent purchasers of NGC-graded coins can rely with confidence on the accuracy of our grading services. To that end, we wish to advise visitors to this site of new information obtained by NGC regarding the Bulgarian 20 and 100 Levas in the "Bulgarian National Bank Hoard".

There has always been a great deal of confusion and conflicting information surrounding the strike date of these coins. In light of this uncertainty, all of the coins from this Hoard graded by NGC are without attribution as to strike date. Instead, each of the NGC-graded coins from this Hoard bears the notation “Dated 1912”. Coin enthusiasts generally understand the notation “Dated xxxx” to indicate that the strike date of a coin cannot be accurately ascertained.

During the past two months, new information has come to light further indicating that these coins were most likely struck well after 1912. Statements have been issued by the Bulgarian National Bank and also by the deputy cashier for the treasury of Bulgaria indicating that these coins were in fact struck in 1967 and 1968.

Although all NGC-graded coins from this Hoard bear a notation to that effect, we are taking this opportunity to remind purchasers of these coins to be aware of a possible difference between the date on the coin and the strike date.
