NGC Introduces Queen Elizabeth II Special Label

Posted on 2/25/2020

The NGC Queen Elizabeth II Special Label celebrates the long-reigning monarch, whose image is the most common numismatic portrait worldwide.

As Constitutional Monarch of 16 sovereign states in the Commonwealth of Nations, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Queen Elizabeth II is featured on numerous coins from many countries, making her image the most common numismatic portrait worldwide. For these coins, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) has created a celebratory special label in tribute to the Queen’s long and significant reign.

Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1926. She was not heir apparent to the throne, however, and it was not until 1936, when her uncle abdicated the crown, that her destiny was revealed. Her father became king, and when he died in 1952, she assumed the responsibilities of the ruling monarch. The next year, at the age of 27, she was officially crowned queen.

When her reign began, post-World War II Britain was a substantial empire with dependent dominions. In the coming decades, many of these dominions achieved independence, and the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth of Nations. As head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II has visited most of the countries that recognize her as queen, thus garnering international attention and widespread respect.

As queen, Elizabeth II has successfully maintained traditions associated with the crown, while working to modernize the monarchy. For example, she has made several historic sites and royal treasures more accessible to the public, and she ended the Civil List, which was a government funding system of the monarchy that dated back over 250 years.

In 2017, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Sapphire Jubilee (65 years on the throne), the only British monarch to ever do so. Several countries in the Commonwealth issued commemorative coins in honor of the momentous occasion.

Notwithstanding her enduring popularity, Queen Elizabeth II famously said, “I have to be seen to be believed.” The NGC Queen Elizabeth II Special Label features the Queen smiling and cheerful during an appearance in 2018, wearing a coordinating fuchsia hat and coat ensemble.
