NGC Grades Spectacular China 1914 Dollar

Posted on 5/26/2020

The Republic Era rarity sold for 360,000 RMB at auction and was then submitted to NGC’s Shanghai office.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) recently certified a spectacular coin that was struck to mark the start of the Republic period (1912-1949). Graded NGC MS 66, this China 1914 (L&M-858) Silver Dollar is an example of what is commonly known as the Yuan Shih-kai Dollar, a series of coins named after the man who led China from 1912 until his death in 1916.

The obverse of this example shows Yuan Shih-kai in military attire with a tall plumed hat. This commemorative issue, like the “Birds over Junk” Dollar (L&M-108) and the Li Yuan-hung Dollar (L&M-45), is very popular with collectors of vintage Chinese coins.

This NGC MS 66 example is extremely attractive with a light iron gray patina highlighted by a beautiful touch of rainbow toning. The fields exhibit a charming luster with a pinkish hue, free from any notable hairlines.

According to the NGC Census, NGC has graded nearly 300 examples of L&M-858, but only three finer than this one. This particular example recently realized 360,000 RMB (about $50,000 USD) at auction.

This impressive vintage coin was submitted to NGC Shanghai Business Information Consulting Co., Ltd. (NGC Shanghai), the China affiliate of NGC. NGC Shanghai grades most vintage Chinese and other coins on a full-time basis at its facility in Shanghai.
