NGC-certified Mint Error Bronze Cent with an Amazing Story Offered in Stack's Bowers Sale

Posted on 10/21/2020

The Lincoln cent is one of the most famous US Mint errors ever struck.

Stack’s Bowers is offering spectacular US coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) in the Session 5 - Larry H. Miller Collection and Session 8 - Rarities Night sales being held from November 12-13, 2020. Online bidding is now open.

A fascinating 1943 Bronze Cent graded NGC AU Details is making its debut in public auction as part of the Rarities Night sale on November 13. In 1943, the US Mint switched to zinc-coated steel planchets in an effort to conserve copper for wartime use, but roughly 20 bronze planchets were unintentionally struck by the Philadelphia Mint.

After 30 years in circulation, this example was discovered in a restaurant gumball machine across the street from the Philadelphia Mint in 1976. The restaurant owner then sold it to a local butcher for $1,000, a remarkable figure at the time.

The butcher’s children cared for the coin for nearly four decades before submitting it to NGC for certification in 2019. This storied cent is considered one of the most famous Mint Errors of the 20th century and is likely to realize six figures.

Meanwhile, the Larry H. Miller Collection sale on November 12 features a phenomenal 1889-CC Morgan Dollar graded NGC 65 MS PL. This is a key date issue and, as the finest certified in the Prooflike or Deep Prooflike grade, a notable condition rarity that is sure to draw spirited bidding.
