Rarities Certified by NGC and PMG Shine in Maison Palombo Sale

Ancient and world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) and banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) excelled in Maison Palombo’s Auction 19 on December 12, 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland.

One of the most successful pieces in the sale was a France 1900A Paris 50 Francs graded NGC PF 64 Cameo that realized 144,000 CHF (about $163,000 USD). The Standing Genius design featured on the obverse represents France’s innovative spirit. It is one of 10 known, including three recorded in the NGC Census.

A Roman Empire – Septimius Severus A.D. 193-211 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Gem MS, 5/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface with Fine Style realized 114,000 CHF (about $129,000 USD). The obverse features Emperor Septimius Severus while the reverse features his wife, Julia Domna, and his two sons, Caracalla and Geta. While Septimius intended for both sons to succeed him, Caracalla became sole emperor after Geta was murdered in A.D. 211.

Meanwhile, a Vietnam - South, National Bank ND (1955-1956) 1,000 Dông Specimen graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated realized 24,000 CHF (about $27,100 USD). The dông became the official currency of South Vietnam in 1953. The coveted Old Man design featured on the front of the note represents the newly established Republic of Vietnam.
