NGC-certified World Coins Sell for Six Figures in Stack’s Bowers Auction

Three rare coins from around the world realized six-figure prices in a Stack’s Bowers auction on January 16, 2021. The top 10 coins in the sale were graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), a testament to the strength of its world coin grading team.

A Mexico 1711MXO J Royal 8 Escudos graded NGC MS 66 and pedigreed to the 1715 Fleet realized $312,000. This coin is known as a “Royal,” because when it was created, special attention was given to the strike and planchet.

Another Mexican coin from a different era, a Mexico 1812GA MR 4 Escudos graded NGC AU 55, realized $168,000. It was struck at the Guadalajara Mint during the Mexican War of Independence (1808-1821).

Meanwhile, an example of a gold rarity struck in the Old World realized $144,000. The Italy 1925R Prova 100 Lire graded NGC PF 67 Matte is a rare and beautiful coin that celebrates both the king and Italy’s victory in World War I.

• a Russia 1836 Imperial Family 1.5 Rubles graded NGC MS 62 that realized $78,000.
