Supersize Gold and Silver Coins Certified by NGC Realize Stunning Prices

Three very large modern British coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) certainly threw their weight around at sales in the past month. One was struck to celebrate the record-breaking reign of Queen Elizabeth II, while the other two were issued to celebrate designs by William Wyon, the famed engraver who elevated the coinage struck by the Royal Mint two centuries ago.
At a sale in Japan, a 2015 Great Britain 1 Kilogram Gold 1,000 Pounds - Longest Reigning Monarch graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo realized 13,000,000 Yen (about $118,000 USD). The coin shows various portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, who has ruled for 69 years. It was the second-highest lot in a Taisei Auction sale held on May 2, 2021.

A few days earlier, a 2020 1 Kilogram Gold "Three Graces" £1,000 graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo realized £144,000 (about $199,000 USD) at a Sovereign Rarities sale. The coin, with an NGC First Day of Issue label, surpassed its pre-sale estimate of £90,000 to £100,000 in the auction, held April 27, 2021.

This ultra-rare coin is number 9 out of 20 Gold £1,000 Three Graces issued by the Royal Mint as part of its Great Engravers series, which celebrates its rich numismatic history. The obverse design pays tribute to Wyon's design in 1817 of three women symbolizing England, Scotland and Ireland, with a shield, thistle and harp at their feet.
Meanwhile, a Great Britain 2019 2 Kilogram Silver “Una and the Lion” £1,000 graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo realized $59,062 in a GreatCollections sale on April 18, 2021. NGC attributed it as #7 out of only 40 such coins issued by the Royal Mint and included a First Releases designation, because it was received by NGC or an approved NGC depository within 30 days of its release.

This coin honors Wyon's "Una and the Lion" design, which was issued in 1839 to celebrate the young Queen Victoria's ascension to the throne. She is depicted walking with a lion, in the character of Lady Una from Edmund Spenser’s “The Faerie Queen.”
At a Heritage Auctions sale in January, a Great Britain 2019 "Una and the Lion" 2 Kilogram Gold £2,000 graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo realized $360,000, far above its pre-auction estimate of $150,000 to $200,000. Like the 2-kilogram silver version, it is encapsulated in an NGC Mega Holder, which can accommodate coins as large as 180 mm in diameter and 28 mm in thickness.
