NGC Celebrates Lego Coin at the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum

Posted on 5/28/2021

The "Built for Blue" six-foot-tall Lego coin was revealed at the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum, with an equally huge NGC special label.

A colossal coin built from Lego bricks was unveiled at the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum on May 10, 2021. Through its exclusive partnership with the organization, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) was invited to attend the event and presented an equally huge NGC certification label to accompany the coin.

The Lego coin is a replica of the 2021 National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum Commemorative Gold $5 coin, available now from the US Mint, and — at nearly six feet tall — is recognized as the first coin to be made from Lego bricks at this scale.

The project, called “Built for Blue,” involved over 90,000 Lego bricks carefully stacked by Lego master builders Melvin Brown and Jermaine Gardner. Completed in three months, the incredible sculpture, featuring detailed interpretations of the male and female officers saluting on the obverse of the coin and the tri-folded flag with three roses on the reverse, is currently on display at the museum in Washington, D.C.

The festivities began with Marcia Ferranto, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum, revealing the impressive statue and introducing the Lego master builders. Melvin Brown and Jermaine Gardner described the task in creating the statue, which was followed by a time-lapsed video of the building process.

Following the video, Ronnie Abbazio, Project Manager of Sales and Marketing of NGC, presented a life-size special NGC certification label to recognize the incredible masterpiece.

“It is an honor to support the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum’s programs through our partnership,” says Abbazio. “This giant Lego coin is a first, and NGC is proud to have been part of its unveiling.”

Dedicated in 1991, the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum honors federal, state and local law enforcement who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. The museum, opened in 2018, organizes exhibits and educational programs to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the public.

For every coin encapsulated with the special label, NGC will pay a royalty to the organization to support its initiatives and programs.
