Arguably, the most extensive series of US paper money, National Bank Notes, began with the passage of the National Banking Act of 1863 and the Act of June 3, 1864. As such, banks received their own charter number and could issue their own notes for a period of 20 years. After that time, they could request a charter renewal. The notes were still issued by the Bureau of Engraving and Design; however, the name of the bank, the bank charter number, the signatures, the state coat of arms and the remarkable artwork were different. There were three charter periods, and the last of these notes were issued in 1935.

With so many different notes issued by a large number of Charter banks across America, the possibility of assembling a complete collection is highly improbable. Sheik Sheck’s is one of more than 40 participants in this set category, the most popular set type for Large Size National Bank notes, and he boasts 82% completion. With 42 slots to fill, this is an accomplishment, to be sure.

Started in June of 2016, this set has been growing as a result of careful planning and thoughtful attention to detail. This collector has taken the time to upload images for all 29 of his notes. The unique, carefully crafted artwork for each note is breathtaking and is evident in every image in this set. Be sure to check out the slideshow here for an extensive presentation of these historic notes.

What is perhaps most noteworthy about this set are the detailed and creative comments for every single note. The descriptions have a poetic style that is engaging.

Thank you, Sheik Sheck, for sharing your amazing and thought-provoking collection with us. We look forward to seeing what additions you have planned next!

Would you like your set to be chosen for a future article? 100% completion in a set is not always feasible. Our team features sets with thoughtful comments and images for their set descriptions and notes. It may be your set! Stay tuned.
