Two German 'City View' Coins Certified by NGC Each Realize Six Figures in a Japanese Auction

The coins feature intricate depictions of a German city in the 18th century.

Two German "City View" coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) took the top spots in Japan-based Auction World’s Sale 25, which was held July 17, 2021. The coins display the skyline of Regensburg, Germany in the 1700s.

The higher-graded of the two coins — a Germany (1765-90)ICB Regensburg 5 Ducats graded NGC MS 63 — rocketed to nine times its opening bid of 4,000,000 JPY (about $36,800 USD) to realize an astounding 37,740,000 JPY (about $344,800 USD). The coin depicts an aerial view of Regensburg across the Danube River on the obverse and the double-headed eagle emblem of the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II on the reverse.

Another Regensburg coin, a Germany (1745-65) Regensburg 8 Ducats graded NGC MS 61 (lot 3267) realized 25,530,000 JPY (about $233,200 USD), more than four times its opening bid. On the obverse, the large coin features a bust of Francis I, the predecessor of Joseph II, who was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745, while the view of the city of Regensburg is shown on the coin's reverse.

Other NGC-certified rarities in the auction included:

  • a Great Britain 1911 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 66 (lot 3448) that realized 5,500,000 JPY (about $50,700 USD)
  • a Great Britain 2014 500 Pounds Britannia graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 3522) that realized 4,995,000 JPY (about $45,600 USD)
  • a Germany 1626 Augsburg Taler graded NGC MS 66 (lot 3184) that realized 4,739,700 JPY (about $43,300 USD)
  • an Italy 1786 Sardinia 5 Doppie graded NGC AU 55 (lot 3557) that realized 4,695,300 JPY (about $42,900 USD)
  • a Germany 1657 EW Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg 2 Ducats graded NGC MS 64 (lot 3294) that realized 4,551,000 JPY (about $41,600 USD)
  • an Austria 1887 Kuttenberg Mines 2 Florins graded NGC PF 65 (lot 3037) that realized 3,996,000 JPY (about $36,500 USD)
  • a China 1912 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1147) that realized 3,552,000 JPY (about $32,500 USD)
  • a Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy V (205/4-180 B.C.) Gold Octodrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface (lot 1552) that realized 3,552,000 JPY (about $32,500 USD)
