NGC Special Designations and Labels for the 2021 American Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set

Posted on 9/6/2021

The limited edition two-coin set features a Silver Eagle with the original design from the West Point Mint and a Silver Eagle with the new design from the San Francisco Mint. Special submission instructions must be followed. See the “Submission Instructions” section of this article.

A designer edition two-coin set, featuring a 2021-W Silver Eagle with the original Silver Eagle design and a 2021-S Silver Eagle with the new Silver Eagle design, is being released by the US Mint on September 13, 2021. The set has a product limit of only 125,000, with both coins featuring a Reverse Proof finish — a first for the redesigned Silver Eagle.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) will distinguish coins from the set with a special designation, Silver Design Set, and each coin will have an attribution of Heraldic Eagle T-1 for the original Silver Eagle and Eagle Landing T-2 for the new Silver Eagle. NGC is also offering the celebratory NGC Eagle 35th Anniversary Label for no additional fee, as well as the popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases Labels.

The obverses of both coins feature Adolf A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty figure. Using modern technology on the redesigned Silver Eagle, this classic image now more closely reflects the original cast design, with the addition of Weinman's artist mark above Liberty's heel.

The original reverse of the Silver Eagle depicts a heraldic eagle, grasping an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left — an image designed and engraved by John Mercanti that has graced the coin since the first American Silver Eagles were issued in 1986. Struck at the West Point Mint, the reverse of this issue displays the "W" mintmark.

The new reverse features an eagle with wings spread preparing to land on an oak branch. It was engraved by Michael Gaudioso, who like John Mercanti, signs certification labels exclusively for NGC. Signed labels from each artist are available through select retailers. This issue is minted at the San Francisco Mint facility, as signified by the "S" mark on the coin.

NGC is the industry leader in the certification of American Eagles, with more than 13 million Silver Eagles graded since 1987 — far exceeding any other third-party grading service. To learn more about NGC’s certification options for all of the 2021 American Eagles, click here.

“The Silver Eagle set is a celebration of the American Eagles’ legacy,” says Mark Salzberg, NGC Senior Grading Finalizer. “NGC is proud to be part of that legacy by grading more American Eagles than any other third-party grading service.”
