Legendary Russian Gold Coin at Center Stage in Stack's Bowers Sale

A rare Russian gold coin is among hundreds of intriguing rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) that are featured in a Collectors Choice sale October 12-14, 2021. Presented by Stack’s Bowers, the sale is divided into three parts: Ancient & World Coins Part 1, World Coins Part 2 and World Coins Part 3.

The star of the sale is a legendary Russia 1902 37.5 Rubles graded NGC AU 58 (Part 3, lot 72181) with an estimate of $120,000 to $150,000. Created during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II (1894-1917), the 37.5 Roubles is the highest denomination issued by the Russian empire. Influenced by the international banking market, the 100 Francs denomination is struck on the legend to show the economic ties to France through the Latin Monetary Union. Only a little over 200 examples were struck, with most given to the tsar to use as gifts to dignitaries.

Meanwhile, a modern rarity being offered is a Great Britain 2021 5 ounce Gold 500 Pounds - Britannia with Lion (Part 2, lot 71143). Decorated in an Art Deco style, the obverse features Britannia with a majestic lion, both symbols of Britain. This rare coin has a mintage of just 83. Graded NGC Proof 70 Ultra Cameo with a First Releases designation, this rarity has an estimate of $18,000 to $24,000.
