Thirteen NGC-certified Vintage European Coins Realize Prices Over $100,000 in Recent Sale

The November 2021 auction presented by Numismatica Genevensis SA included rarities from Europe.

Rarities from Bohemia, Switzerland and Portugal were among 13 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) that realized prices over $100,000 in a recent sale. Auction 14, presented by Switzerland-based Numismatica Genevensis SA, concluded November 16, 2021.

Leading the way was a Bohemia 1659/5 Prague 10 Ducats graded NGC AU 55 (lot 218) that realized CHF 338,800 (about $369,000), far exceeding its starting price of CHF 50,000. The coin shows Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, who ruled from 1658 to 1705. The coin, which weighs 34.43 grams, is encapsulated in an NGC Oversize Holder.

An extremely rare Switzerland 1886B 5 Francs graded NGC MS 64 (lot 395) also realized CHF 338,800 (about $369,000). The coin features on its obverse Helvetia, the personification of Switzerland, seated against a background of mountains.

Meanwhile, a Portugal, Lisbon (1489-95) Justo graded NGC MS 63 (lot 377) realized CHF 229,900 (about $250,000). The coin was struck under King John II, whose rule from 1481 to 1495 was linked to economic expansion and global exploration. The Justo owes its name to the legend on the coin: IVSTVS VT PALMA FLOREBIT (from Psalms 92:12: "The just, like the palm tree, will flower").

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

  • an Austria 1709 Salzburg 10 Ducat graded NGC MS 62+ (lot 227) and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection that realized CHF 193,600 (about $211,000)
  • a Switzerland (circa 1772) Bern 10 Ducats graded NGC MS 63 PL (lot 406) that realized CHF 169,400 (about $184,000)
  • a Germany 1739 Bavaria 10 Ducat graded NGC AU 58 and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 201) that realized CHF 157,300 (about $171,000)
  • a Switzerland (Undated) Gold Merit Award graded NGC MS 63 PL (lot 496) that realized CHF 157,300 (about $171,000)
  • a Germany (1667) HF Regensburg 10 Ducats graded NGC AU 58 (lot 209) that realized CHF 145,200 (about $158,000)
  • a France 1824A Essai Gold 5 Francs graded NGC PF 63 Cameo and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 268) that realized CHF 145,200 (about $158,000)
  • a France 1831A Gold 5 Francs graded NGC PF 62 Cameo and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 269) that realized CHF 102,850 (about $112,000)
  • an Italy 1642 Genoa 5 Doppie graded NGC MS 65 (lot 331) that realized CHF 102,850 (about $112,000)
  • a Bohemia (1526-64) Ducat graded NGC MS 64 (lot 251) that realized CHF 96,800 (about $105,000)
  • an Austria 1656 Ortenburg 5 Ducats graded NGC MS 61 (lot 219) that realized CHF 93,170 (about $101,000)
